Letter from Mrs. Friesen

Letter from Mrs. Friesen
Gayla Knight

July 24, 2020

YES Family,

I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy!  These last four months have been such a crazy ride for all of us.  I am so excited that we are able to begin school on August 13, 2020!  I know that some of you are very worried and nervous about getting kids back to school, and I would be lying if I didn’t tell you that I have some worries myself. That being said, I believe that it is important, for many reasons, to give students the opportunity to come back to school. Dr. Bartholomew sent a letter out earlier this week highlighting some of the return to school plans we have in place as a district.  Also, over the course of the next week, short video segments highlighting different components of our return to school plan will be sent out as well.  As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or need clarification, please do NOT hesitate to reach out!

Every year we open our school doors and our hearts to your children and this year will be no different from that respect.  Other things will seem very different and it will take some getting used to.  I do know that kids are resilient, they will adjust to the new normal quickly.  Please communicate your worries, concerns, and fears to me and we will work through those together.  No matter what your family decides is the right thing for them, it will be important that adults stay calm and not bad mouth each other.  As you know, kids hear everything and we as adults need to show them calm in the midst of chaos.  I read recently that we all need to be like a duck, calm, and collected at the surface even when we are frantically paddling underwater.  I care about your children, and I care about your family.  We can and will get through this together.

Next week you will be receiving a letter from your child’s classroom teacher.  There will be specific information about our open houses at each grade level, please read over that information carefully.  We will be dividing families into two sessions, that letter will tell you which session you are assigned. Open house will have to look very different than it has in the past.  On the back of this letter are the dates and times of each grade level’s open house, please get these on your calendar and remember more information will be included in the letter from your child’s classroom teacher.

2nd Grade Open House

5th Grade Open House:

  • Thursday, August 6, 2020 5:00 & 6:00

We are asking that only the student and 1 parent/adult come to the open house, we are trying to manage numbers so that we are able to socially distance.  Please make sure your student and the parent/adult accompanying them has a mask.  (Also, a quick note about masks.  It is absolutely NOT our plan to have students and staff in masks all day. When we are able to socially distance, masks will NOT need to be worn. Teachers are working hard to find ways to socially distance within their classrooms as well as find ways to have class outside where socially distancing is easier to accomplish.  We also are planning to have scheduled “mask breaks” throughout the day. We will still have lunch and recess, we will just work to have plans in place to socially distance during those times)

This has been a very challenging time for me both personally and professionally, I am asking that we all show a lot of grace and patience with each other.  No doubt that this school year will bring about many challenges for all of us! Remember, no matter what decisions you make as a family, we are all part of the YES Family, and that is important!  I am missing your kids and I am truly excited to see them again!  I am so ready to have our classrooms and hallways filled with their voices and laughter!! Looking forward to a great 2020-2021 school year!
